Board Members

HeartKids Australia Inc is governed by a board made up of State Member representatives and Independent Directors. The current Directors are:

Dr. Lisa Selbie
PhD,BSc (Hons)
Lisa was appointed to the Board in July, 2014 and appointed Chair in May 2015. As a lecturer in biotechnology at Johns Hopkins University, Dr Selbie brings many years of experience in basic and medical research and consultancies. Dr. Selbie received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Cell Biology at Northwestern University and has held research positions at Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney and Queens Medical School at the University of Nottingham, studying the expression and function of neuropeptide receptors involved in cardiovascular regulation.

Since 2001, Dr Selbie has developed and delivered on-ground and online courses in cell and molecular biology in the Johns Hopkins University biotechnology MS/MBA Program as well as serving on the NSW Ausbiotech committee as an advocate for the biotechnology industry. Dr Selbie has also been a consultant in the biotechnology and healthcare sectors and is currently with Biotech Primer Inc, a global company providing biotechnology training to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, the national biotechnology organisation AusBiotech, and other government agencies in the Asia/Pacific region.

Dr Selbie has been a member of the HeartKids Australia Research Advisory Committee since 2011 and currently holds the position of chair on this committee.

Mr. David Harrison
Vice Chairperson
David was appointed to the board in September 2013 as a state representative for South Australia. David is also a member of the Alignment and Engagement Committee. He was appointed Vice Chair effective July 1, 2014, following the resignation of Dr Anne Fletcher.

David is first and foremost a Heartkids parent and has been on the HeartKids SA board since July 2008. David is a financial planner with 17 years’ experience and owns and operates Money Options Pty Ltd which holds an Australian Financial Services Licence and specialises in helping its clients through all stages of financial planning needs. Prior to this David served 8 years as a Police Officer and for a period of this time was a representative with the SA Police Association.

Mr Clayton Hickey
Clayton was appointed to the Board in March 2014. He is a Chartered Accountant 17 years’ professional experience in public accounting practice. Clayton is an Assurance Partner of PKF, and currently leads the Sydney and Newcastle Assurance practice. Clayton is a non-executive director and a member of the Audit Committee.

Clayton is a Director of PKF Australia, and an Audit Committee member of Twin Towns Services Club Limited. Clayton was previously the Audit Committee Chairperson of Hunter Medicare Local Limited.

Mrs Beverley Barber
Bev was appointed as an Independent Director in November 2013 with the role of Advocacy. She has recently been appointed as Chair, Audit, Risk & Compliance Committee.

Bev is a Director with PwC in their management consulting team. She has 25 years’ experience working across Federal, State and Local government. She is the former State Director of the Liberal Party in South Australia and has significant experience working with government to achieve outcomes for clients.

Bev is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, is a qualified Paralegal and holds a Graduate Certificate in Public Sector Management and a Graduate Diploma in Public Policy and Management.

Mr Gary Bird
Gary currently holds the position of Country Manager for MEDA Pharmaceuticals ANZ. Previously he has held a number of senior marketing roles in the healthcare sector, including Regional Marketing Director for Johnson and Johnson with responsibility for 14 local operating companies across the Asia Pacific region.  Gary has been recognised within Johnson and Johnson as Asia Pacific Marketer of the Year, and was a founding member of the company’s Innovation Council with a mission to lead and drive a sustainable culture of innovation. Gary has over 20 years of experience in Sales, Sales Management, Organisational Learning & Development and Marketing.  He is a graduate of the Asialink Leaders Program and a member of the Asialink Alumni Committee. He is an elected Councillor of the Municipality of Hunters Hill and is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He holds a degree in Medical Science from the University of Sydney.

Mr Jared Brotherston
Jared was appointed to the Board in September 2014. He has over 13 years’ experience as a director and company secretary in both Australia and New Zealand. Jared has been a construction barrister, and held company secretarial and general management roles in postal services, construction and transport & logistics. More recently he was an Associate Director in KPMG’s Major Projects team and consulted to the oil & gas and resources sector. Currently, Jared holds a senior commercial role as Manager Operational Contracts for the Roy Hill mining project based in Perth.

Dr Joanne Redburn
Joanne was appointed to the Board in January 2014. She is the director in her own legal practice, NFP Lawyers, providing legal advice and support to a diverse range of not for profit organisations throughout Australia. Joanne’s specialist knowledge of the not for profit sector has assisted boards in developing good governance, restructuring and mergers, regulatory compliance, commercialisation and intellectual property protection strategies.

Because of Joanne’s breath of knowledge in understanding the not for profit sector she recognised a need to provide not for profit directors, managers and staff with practical advice and support in effectively managing and operating their not for profit organisations. So she established NFP Management Solutions.

Joanne is an experienced board member, in addition to her role as director of both the HeartKids Australia and Queensland boards she is a director and company secretary of another not-for-profit. Joanne also chairs the HeartKids Queensland Governance Committee.

Ms Tania Tytherleigh
Tania was appointed to the HeartKids Australia Board in December 2014 as a state representative for Victoria/Tasmania. Tania has served on the Heartkids Vic/Tas Board since October 2012, and is a also a member of the Marketing and Fundraising Subcommittee of HKV/Tas. Tania is a parent to Heartkid Flynne, aged 18 years.

Tania has over 25 years of experience in Learning Design and Development and is the founder and director of the Master Trainers Institute Australia. She is a Master Trainer, professional public speaker and Executive Coach who works with many of Australia’s leading organisations. Tania also lectures in Marketing and Communications.

Mrs Karen Graham
Karen was appointed to the HeartKids Australia Board in June 2015 as a state representative for New South Wales/ACT. Karen has served on the HeartKids NSW/ACT Board since April 2013.

Karen is a highly experienced marketing professional with a strong track record for driving business turnaround and improving results through clear leadership, excellent marketing and people management skills in FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) and not for profit sectors. Passionate, energetic and results orientated, combining marketing experience with strong strategy development, change and people management skills. Karen also has strong experience of voluntary/not for profit work including charity work in India 1985 and Team Leadership with Operation Raleigh in South America 1992/3 including her Deputy Director Role with the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, the UK largest children’s charity focusing on both the prevention of child abuse and protection of children across the UK.

Mr Simon Craddock
B.Sc. Dip. Law  AGIA
Simon was appointed Company Secretary in May 2015. He is a Member of the Governance Institute of Australia and Institute of Chartered Secretaries Australia and an admitted solicitor of the High Court of Australia and Supreme Court of New South Wales with over 17 years experience in the legal industry. Over the past 8 years, Simon has held positions of in-house legal counsel in banking and corporate finance with local and global financial institutions. Prior to this, Simon worked in private practice based in commercial and corporate law and dispute resolution as well as in retail and business banking advisory and transactional work.

Simon works as Legal Counsel in Legal & Secretariat at Rabobank Australia & New Zealand Group in providing legal, company secretarial and corporate governance advice. Simon currently holds the position of Executive Committee Member of the Australian Corporate Lawyers Association and Public Officer for the Northbridge Progress Association.
