After a long time trying to conceive, we were finally pregnant with our 2nd child. We had agreed that I would go for our routine 20 week scan by myself as things were crazy at work for Alvin and we assumed it would be all great. Why wouldn’t it be?

SOME wear it as a badge of honour. For others it is a constant reminder of the trauma they have endured.
Then there are those like three-year-old William Chamberlain who are still too young to fully understand what the long scar – known affectionately as the zipper – represents.
“He went into a shoe shop one day and he lifted up his shirt and said to the sales assistant: ‘This is my zipper and I have a broken heart’,” William’s mother Lisa said.

Mum’s heartfelt desire to help
JENNY Azzopardi is on a mission to raise public awareness of congenital heart disease.
The Quakers Hill mother of five children has served as a HeartKids volunteer since her youngest child, Dominic, now 6, had three heart defects repaired at the Children’s Hospital in Westmead when he was just two weeks old.

Canon supporting HeartKids
HeartKids recently received an incredibly generous donation of photographic and office equipment by Canon. Equipment included digital cameras and printers. These will be placed in each of the major children’s hospitals and be available for parents to capture and print their precious moments with their children. In addition Canon provided printers and consumables for all the State Offices. This generous donation follows on from the $60,000 given to HeartKids Victoria after Jo Larsen won the Canon ‘Creative for a Cause’ photography competition with her photo of her son Zeke.
Canon has subsequently made HeartKids one of it charities of choice for the year and is looking at additional ways it can support our work.

Surgery Cancellations at Royal Children’s Hospital
Each week, six Australian children are born with heart problems requiring operations to save them or give them a chance to actively take part in life.
More than 400 children are on waiting lists for cardiac surgery in Victoria, with one angry mum saying “it’s just not good enough”.
Between them, (clockwise from top left) Chrysoula Petras, Kevin Innes, Makayla Tyrrell (on his lap), Brodie Guy, Lincoln Catlin and Julian Michielin have had 19 operations cancelled since June.
Up to 60 operations were cancelled at the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) last month because there is nowhere for them to recover. Read more…

Mother of 6 and HeartKids of SA’s committee member Heather Round was announced the winner of Banardo’s Australian ‘Mother of the Year’. Heather and Tim Round are the proud owners of Max’s Place, accomodation for families of children that need to be relocated to Melbourne for life giving surgery.

Pasta Master Sponsorship Launch
At a series of launches in February, Pasta Master was announced as a Primary Foundation Sponsor of HeartKids. Launch functions occurred at Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne, Westmead Children’s Hospital Sydney and the Mater Hospital Brisbane

Tiffin-Rose Weder is a brave 18 year old from Perth who suffers from a serious heart condition that threatens to take her life. Rather than dwell on this, Tiff wants to use her time to assist HeartKids by raising awareness of Children’s Heart Disease and hopefully attract funding to ensure less children are born with heart disease and that mortality rates improve….more.
