Grief counselling and support
Whether your loss happened recently or many years ago, the HeartKids’ Support Team offers free grief counselling to you and all members of your family. Our professional, compassionate Social Workers have many years’ experience supporting people through grief and the emotions and challenges that come with it. If you just want to know there’s someone you can call on from time to time, who will listen without judgment or getting overwhelmed, HeartKids is here for you.
Referrals and mental health support
HeartKids’ Support Teams work in partnership with hospital Social Work staff and health professionals to assist you and your families by referring you to other grief and loss services and programs. For example we can connect siblings with specialist assistance via the HeadSpace Programs and or work with you and your General Practitioner (GP) to develop a Mental Health Plan. Feedback from families are that both these services are highly valued and of great assistance.
A member of our Support Team can meet with you face-to-face at our offices in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and or Sydney. In some instances we have trained Peer Support Volunteers working in regional communities.
You can also call us on HeartKids Helpline 1800 432 785 Monday to Friday, 9am – 7pm AEST. We’ll always try to connect you with the same person each time. If you prefer and are comfortable a member of our staff can Skype or Face Time you. If you'd rather connect with us by email, contact firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll get back to you in less than two working days.
From 2018 HeartKids will offer regular Phone Based Support Groups for bereaved parents facilitated by HeartKids’ Social Workers, with topics decided by those taking part. These groups are an opportunity to connect with others, share experiences and talk about ways to cope. We will offer groups for parents whose child has died recently, and for those whose have been bereaved for a longer time.
Heart Angel Volunteers (Peer Support)
Heart Angel Peer Support Volunteers are trained parents and volunteers who have shared grief and loss experiences. From 2018 this new program will be rolled out and include twenty volunteers who work under the direction HeartKids Support staff to provide support and assistance including catch up morning teas, outings for siblings, cooked meals and other practical support.
