Biography
Dr Michael Rowland is a Cardiothoracic Surgeon and TAVI Practitioner at the University Hospital Geelong. He particularly specialises in adult Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery and has a strong interest in aortic and mitral valve surgery, coronary bypass surgery and acquired lung disease.
After completing his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at the University of New South Wales in 1987, Dr Rowland began his training at St Vincent’s Hospital (SVH) in Sydney. He spent seven years advancing his experience in Cardiothoracic Surgery and Transplantation at SVH and was awarded his fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery in 1996. During this time, he also completed two years at the Baker Medical Research Institute in Melbourne as a Post-Graduate Research Fellow with a special interest into the effects of ageing on the heart. He continued to advance his training at the Austin Repatriation Medical Centre, Royal Children’s Hospital (Melbourne) and Royal Melbourne Hospital.
Additionally, he studied overseas at Cambridge University’s Papworth Hospital as a Specialist Registrar before returning to Melbourne in 1998. Dr Rowland began consulting as a Cardiothoracic Surgeon at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Melbourne Private Hospital, Epworth Hospital, and Cabrini Hospital from 1998 to 2001. Following this, he worked as a VMO Thoracic Surgeon and Head of Unit at the Northern Hospital for the past 8 years. He worked as a Cardiothoracic and Transplant Surgeon at The Alfred Hospital for 10 years and continued to consult as a Cardiothoracic Surgeon at the Cabrini Hospital from 1998 to 2019.
Dr Rowland has continued to advance his learning and is currently completing his Bachelor of Engineering, Robotics, and Mechatronics (Honours) at the Swinburne University. He has greatly contributed to many publications and presentations, committees and associations.
