For the first time in history, there are more adults than children living with congenital heart disease in Australia*. Every week, 8 babies are born with a heart defect in Australia. The past 60 years have brought dramatic surgical and medical advances, allowing more than 90% of these children to live into adulthood*.
It is estimated that 64,000 Australians are currently living with a congenital heart condition, of which over 32,000 are adults. The number of adults are increasing by 5% each year*.
Childhood heart disease in adulthood is different than childhood heart disease in childhood. Adults with childhood heart disease have unique needs and challenges, and require continuous surveillance and care.
HeartKids realises that congenital heart disease is a lifetime journey and is here to support you through life. Visit our Support and Information pages for more information, or call our HeartKids Helpline on 1800 432 785 for speak to someone to point you in the right direction.
