HeartKids Early Childhood Programs: Better Beginnings

Children with childhood-onset heart disease (CoHD) can sometimes experience challenges with development as they grow. Early support can help families better understand their child’s strengths and any areas where a little extra support may be helpful.

Through the HeartKids early childhood intervention program, families can access guidance, developmental insights and practical strategies to support their child’s growth and confidence.

The program offers online group sessions for families nationwide, in-person group sessions in South Australia, and one-on-one sessions (online or in person) with HeartKids Occupational Therapist, Esther Karas.

Online Information Sessions

Available Nationwide

For parents and carers of a heart kid aged 0 – 4 years old, these online information sessions cover topics such as:

  • Mealtimes
  • Toileting
  • Sleep
  • Attachment

The online group sessions provide the opportunity to hear developmental information and empower parents and carers with practical, every day strategies to support their heart kid’s development.

In-Person Group Sessions

Available in South Australia Only

Facilitated by an occupational therapist and or early childhood educator, this play-based group supports children and families through guided activities and shared connection.

Families can expect:

  • Targeted play activities that support developmental goals

  • Opportunities to connect with and learn alongside other heart families in South Australia

  • A supportive environment with professional guidance

One-on-One Occupational Therapy Session

Available via telehealth nationally, or in person in South Australia.

Families can access one-on-one occupational therapy support to work towards individual developmental goals, including:

  • Independence skills such as dressing, toileting, sleep and mealtimes

  • Emotional regulation

  • Social concepts and interaction

  • Fine and gross motor skills

  • Sensory processing

Support also includes assistance with referrals to local services where appropriate. Availability of sessions is limited.
