New Animation: Gemma’s Bicillin Day

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, News

HeartKids is proud to launch Gemma’s Bicillin Day: What to expect when receiving treatment for RHD — a new animation designed to help young people feel more prepared and supported when receiving their Bicillin injections.

The animation was developed in collaboration with Children’s Ground and in consultation with RHD nurses, alongside the HeartKids Action Plan team.

The voice of Gemma is brought to life by Selita Wailu, a proud Gumbaynggirr/Dowareb Meriam Mir young person and the granddaughter of HeartKids’ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Engagement Manager, Angela Webb. Bicillin injections are a critical part of ongoing treatment for rheumatic heart disease (RHD), but they can be painful and daunting. This animation was created to help children and families understand what to expect in a simple and reassuring way.

This resource is designed to support young people and can be shared by:
• Clinicians working with children receiving RHD treatment
• Support teams connecting with families in hospitals and communities
• Parents and carers preparing their children for injections

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this important and culturally informed tool to support children receiving RHD treatment.
