This October, Jackson and his family will be part of the HeartKids Two Feet & A Heartbeat campaign.
Jackson was diagnosed with congenital heart disease during pregnancy and underwent his first surgery at just 10 days old. Jackson’s mum, Jade, shares his heart story and the support their family has found through HeartKids.
Can you tell us about Jackson’s heart journey?
Jackson was diagnosed during pregnancy with double inlet left ventricle (DILV), hypoplastic aortic arch and congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (CCTGA).
He underwent his first surgery at just 10 days old and, due to complications, required a pacemaker shortly afterwards.
Before his first birthday, Jackson had already undergone five surgeries and overcome many post-surgical complications, spending most of his first year in ICU and the cardiac ward. While he will need another surgery in the future, he doesn’t let his heart condition stop him from enjoying life.

How has HeartKids supported your journey?
HeartKids always supported us in the hospital, checking in letting us know we aren’t alone on this journey. They always offered advice when needed and allowed us to step out of the hospital room when needed.

What do you wish more people understood about childhood heart conditions?
Congenital heart disease is a life long battle and a broad spectrum. No two children have the same journey.
What would you say to another heart family?
Your child’s heart condition doesn’t define them. Lean on the people around you, ask for help when you need it and remember that you’re never alone on this journey. There is a whole community of heart families who truly understand what you’re going through.
