Tasman’s Story

Blogs, Two Feet

This October, Tasman and his family will join the HeartKids community at the Hobart Two Feet & A Heartbeat walk. His dad, Jamie, shares their family’s journey and reflects on the support they received from HeartKids during some of their most challenging moments.

Can you tell us about Tasman’s heart journey?

Tasman is the youngest of three children. He was suspected to have Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA) at our 13 week scan, with the diagnosis confirmed at 16 weeks pregnant. He was monitored throughout pregnancy by specialists from Hobart and Melbourne, then our family relocated to Melbourne ahead of birth so his surgery could be performed at The Royal Children’s Hospital.

How has HeartKids supported your family?

HeartKids supported our family by ensuring we were aware of the support available from Tasman’s first week of life, both in and outside of hospital. They also provided a weekly morning tea and welcoming environment for heart kids and/or their families to come together.

What do you wish more people understood about childhood heart conditions?

There are a lot of conditions that impact children and families differently.

What would you say to another heart family?

Try to take one step at a time and seek support when needed.

To support families like Tasman’s, join your local Two Feet & A Heartbeat walk this October.
